Question: Do you have any tips for bathing/teeth brushing for my child who we suspect may be autistic?
From: B
Two exceptionally common routines in daily life (in our house they are moulded into one *shrug*)
Speaking generally of course, my go-to ideas would be centred around
a) Motivation – can themes, characters or favourite songs be used to create more buy-in?
b) Trying to create positive memories of the activities outside of “go time” (i.e. the time where they have to be done and everyone is a bit overwhelmed/anxious/emotional). This could be through pretend play, or just ‘funny time’ as a family. Never underestimate the power of a positive association, particularly for rigid thinkers. This can be really helpful for both them and you!
c) Can some type of visual (including video or animated powerpoint, etc.) be used as a motivating model? In the past I’ve done things like creating an animated powerpoint where Buzz Lightyear brushes his teeth for a client to imitate/model/copy.
THANKS for asking! We hope you, and others, find some use in these ideas.
