GOOD BOOKS?
2025 is here and we are so excited for the first part of this year. We have a final year occupational therapy student, Charlotte, doing her last work placement with us for 10 weeks starting on the 28th of Jan and we are hoping to ramp up our allied health assistant support considerably.
After a recent discussion about good books, we thought it would be a good idea to share some of our favourites related to our work. Here goes:
Social – Matthew Lieberman.
This book is Luke’s personal fave. Not a therapeutic book per se, but one that piques his interest in social development and how our species has evolved to be wired for social cooperation.
The Whole-Brain Child – Dr. Daniel Siegel and Tina Payne Bryson.
A reader-friendly book that introduces its audience to the different processes of our brain. It gives a great new lens of understanding behaviour and is a must-read for everyone in our eyes.
The Teenage Brain – Dr. Frances Jensen and Amy Ellis Nutt.
In theme with “The Whole-Brain Child”, this book explains the huge brain changes that occur in teenagehood. This book should be a non-negotiable for anyone raising teens or working in high schools.
Beyond Behaviours – Dr. Mona Delahooke
A marvellous book that explains the brain science behind behaviour with realistic tools that can be used to help the reader understand and work with behaviours they are observing at home or in their classroom. This book, if read with an open mind, has the ability to greatly influence our societal systems. Most importantly, the information in this book gives the reader a real opportunity to support good mental health for ALL children.
Have a read of any that sound interesting to you and let us know your thoughts! If there are other books you’ve found seminal, share them with our community!
